I know many people use rapidshare for many different reasons. Of course, the biggest reason is for downloading software which shouldn’t be shared. But, there are I’m sure those of you who use it for real reasons. Of course if you want to download some rather large files, or just a large number of smaller files without paying a monthly service fee, you will be stopped and told to wait for a certain time period. Sometimes over three hours. But wait! There’s a fix for this.
You see, Rapidshare logs your IP address, and the information about the file you are downloading to determine how much usage you have left before you must wait. Well, the simple solution is to log on to rapidshare with a different IP address. Sounds easy enough right? Well, yes it actually is. Here’s the short tutorial I found at http://www.blogiseverything.com It only takes about thirty seconds to complete and for me has worked like a charm. I tested it downloading a collection of files a few times over which set off the meter and told me I had to wait. I followed the instructions, and voila I was right back on track in under a minute…Here’s the tutorial: [please note, these steps vary from the original, I edited the wording somewhat for ease of reading]
To start, if you use a router, unplug it and connect your cable modem directly to your computer…
1. Open up the command prompt: Start -> Run; Type in CMD and hit enter
2. In the command prompt, type “ipconfig/all” and hit enter. This will show your current IP. Then, type “ipconfig/release” and hit enter. Keep the command prompt open; we will need it.
3. Go to “Network Connections” (accessible through the control panel). Right click “Local Area Connection” and click “Properties”
4. With “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) selected, click the “Properties” button.
5. A new window will open. Under the “General” tab, select “Use the Following IP address”. Under “Ip Address”, put “10.0.0.1″. Press the “Tab” key on your keyboard. (this will enter 255.0.0.0 in the default)
6. Press Ok on BOTH open windows.
7. Repeat steps 3-4. Then, Under the “General” tab, press the radio button “Obtain an IP address automatically”. Press ok on BOTH windows.
8. Go back to the command prompt and type in “Ipconfig/all”. You’ll now notice you have a new IP address.
So, this will be handy if you want to by-pass Rapidshare 1 hour download limit, provided that you have a static IP address. [i however do not have a static IP, and this still works]
Now, I have done this several times over, and I have noticed that you do not have to follow Step # 7 fully. I have done this trick without repeating steps 3 and 4 before selecting “assign me an IP automatically”. Not that I want to confuse anyone, I just gave it a shot without repeating those steps with success as well. Let me know if you got it to work, or why you couldn’t and maybe I can help.
